Mr Stephen Hui Sze Fun started his university education in Civil Engineering at St John's University in Shanghai, and furthered his studies at the Colorado School of Mines in the United States where he graduated in 1940 with double professional degrees in Mining Engineering and Geological Engineering.

Since his return from the United States, Mr Hui has held managerial positions in shipping and investment, and in a number of industrial establishments in Hong Kong. During the past forty years he has been actively engaged in the mining industry, first in China and later in Hong Kong, and has had wide experience in consulting practice. He is a member of a number of professional bodies including the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers; the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME; the Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME; the American Association of Petroleum Geologists of the USA; and Minerals Engineering Society of England. He is also a 1974 Medalist of Distinguished Achievement Award in the fields of Mineral Engineering conferred by the Colorado School of Mines, USA and an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy of the United Kingdom.

Mr Hui is Chairman and Managing Director of Yan Hing Mining Co Ltd and Chow Hing Investment Co Ltd. He has been a member of the University Court since 1977 and has contributed substantially to assist research and teaching in Geology.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the mining industry in Hong Kong and for his support of research and teaching in Geology in the University of Hong Kong, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa.
