Dr Chow Yei Ching is Chairman and Managing Director of the Chevalier Group of Companies, founded in 1970. Chevalier has branches in six countries and four major cities in China and employs a staff of more than 4,500 people. It is the largest comprehensive engineering multinational enterprise in Hong Kong. Dr Chow has been, for many years, involved in community and charity work in the territory. He has served as a Director of Yan Chai Hospital and the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. His keen interest in the development of education in the territory has led him to accept the positions of committee member of the Advisory Committee of the China Business Centre at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Member of the Court which is the supreme advisory body at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Court member at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. In addition he is a Founding Honorary Patron of the University of Hong Kong Foundation for Educational Development and Research. In recognition of his contributions to the promotion of commercial ties between Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, Dr Chow was awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1991. Two years later he was made Officer in the Order of the Crown by the King of Belgium. Dr Chow was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Business Administration by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Honorary University Fellowship by the University of Hong Kong in 1995.
In recognition of his services to the economy of Hong Kong, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa.
