Dr George Choa, an internationally recognised authority on ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgery (Otorhinolaryngology), has long been a prominent figure in the affairs of his profession and is a past President of both the British Medical Association (Hong Kong Branch) and the Hong Kong Medical Association.
Dr Choa's contribution to otorhinolaryngology deserves special mention since he was the first ENT specialist (equivalent to Consultant Surgeon) appointed by the Medical and Health Department in 1960. He later helped in the establishment of the first eight ENT clinics in Hong Kong and he was the founder of the ENT Society in 1967. Recently he was also elected President of the Asia-Oceanic Federation of ENT Societies, while the Hong Kong ENT Society under his leadership sponsored the Seventh Asia-Oceanic International Meeting in 1991.
Dr Choa is known to many for his service to the public, notably as Chairman and member of various service associations and advisor to Government and non-Government bodies. His efforts were instrumental in the establishment of a Centre at Sai Ying Pun in 1974 for the better treatment of deaf children, including teaching, rehabilitation and counselling of parents etc. He has also been actively involved with the St John's Ambulance Brigade and Association for many years and was appointed by His Excellency the Governor to be Chairman in 1987.
In recognition of his contributions to the medical profession and to the community, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa.
