Mr James Kung Ziang Mien is a low-profile banker who, nevertheless, plays an active role in public service. He serves on the boards of directors of many prominent public bodies such as the Community Chest and Ocean Park. He is especially keen in contributing his time and energy towards the development of higher education in Hong Kong. Throughout the 1980s he served, in turn, on the Council of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Board of Trustees of its Chung Chi College, the Council of the then Hong Kong Polytechnic (as Treasurer), and on the Council of the then Hong Kong Baptist College. Recently he has rendered great service in promoting international exchange for the University of Hong Kong, notably in its collaborations with Fudan University, in Shanghai. The University is especially indebted to Mr Kung for the pivotal role he played in securing a collaboration agreement between the prestigious Institute Pasteur, in Paris, and the University’s Faculty of Medicine.
In recognition of his services to the development of higher education in Hong Kong, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa.
