It is estimated that Professor Sir Derek Harold Richard Barton has probably had more honours conferred on him by universities, chemical societies and governments than any living chemist and in 1969 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The award was jointly made to him and another chemist for their contributions to the development of the concept of conformity and its application in chemistry. Professor Barton was Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London, from 1957 and 1970. He is a member of the Royal Society and a foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
In recognition of his services, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa.
