Professor Liu Ts’un Yan is Emeritus Professor of the Australian National University where he served from 1962. His expert knowledge and vast research experience in the linguistic, literary, historical and cultural development of China have won him international acclaim, bringing him numerous academic honours and memberships of many learned societies.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland and of the Royal Economic Society, a Honorary Fellow of the New Asia Research Institute, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a Foundation Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, and a Member of the Australian Humanities Research Council, and of the Nippon Dokyo Gakkai (Society for Taoist Research), Japan.

As a distinguished scholar, Professor Liu is also closely involved in education. He has held various important teaching posts at institutions around the world, including previous teaching appointments at Kwang Hua University, Shanghai; Columbia University; the University de Paris VIII; and the University of Hawaii. He has been invited on numerous occasions to deliver lectures and to make presentations in universities around the world, among these being Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, California, Hamburg, Oxford, London, Leeds and Stockholm.

In recognition of his contribution to Chinese language, literature and historical studies, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa.
