Dr Lee Shau Kee is a premier property developer who controls five listed companies, viz. Henderson Land, Henderson Investment, Hong Kong and China Gas, Hong Kong Ferry Holdings and the Miramar Group. His achievement as a businessman is perhaps unequalled in Hong Kong. Dr Lee has, for many years, been involved in community and charity work, he has given generously to many community projects in both Hong Kong, mainland China and the UK. In 1979 he established the Lee Shau Kee Scholarships tenable at Wadham College, Oxford. Each year, three to four Hong Kong students are admitted to Wadham, thanks to his generosity. In 1982 Dr Lee and his friends established the Pei Hua Education Foundation “to assist China in the training and development of her professionals”. In 1993 he was made an honorary citizen of Guangzhou and was appointed a Hong Kong Affairs Advisor by the Chinese government. Dr Lee has been a major benefactor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong since he helped establish the three-year MBA programme with a generous donation. Dr Lee has also received Honorary Doctorates from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

In recognition of his services to education and the economy of Hong Kong, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa.
