Biography

Mr Daniel Yu Chung Kwong is a celebrated industrialist in Hong Kong, and the Chairman and Director of Maxwell Electronics Limited. 

Mr Yu knew from an early age that he had an innate talent for working with electronics and founded Maxwell Electronics in 1966 after furthering his studies in the US. With his innovative designs and business sense, particularly in the production of camera flash units, Mr Yu’s manufacturing business was propelled to unforeseen levels of success, contributing greatly to Hong Kong’s export sector, especially Mainland China.

Over the past half-century, Mr Yu has witnessed both the ups and downs of the Hong Kong economy as well as the devastation of different pandemics ranging from the H5N1 virus to the SARS outbreak. He commends the achievements of HKU and respects the devotion and hard work of its academics. In addition to being an Honorary Patron of the HKU Foundation, beginning in 2012, Mr Yu pledged support for medical research through the establishment of four Endowed Professorships at the HKU Faculty of Medicine in Virology; Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology; Anaesthesiology; and Breast Cancer Research. In 2022, Mr Yu further established the “Daniel and Mayce Yu Medical Development Fund” to provide the best possible teaching and learning opportunities, as well as research and knowledge exchange activities for our students, scientists and future medical and health practitioners.  

Mr Yu’s faith and belief in the University will help it deliver an ever-greater impact in medical and health sciences education and research. His unwavering encouragement reminds us to keep reinventing ourselves, not just for Hong Kong but also China and the rest of the world.

In recognition of his contributions to academia and society, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa.
