The Honorary Degree would recognise Mr Daniel Yu Chung-Kwong’s unique vision in scientific research to unravel the basis of medical disease and to restore health, which he believes is critical for the development of humankind. Mr Yu is also a strong advocate for higher education, the single most important driver for the advancement of a nation.
Not only is Mr Yu a staunch supporter of Hong Kong’s higher education sector, his success is also a celebration of the Hong Kong story – he is a 白手興家大慈善家 who fought with his bare hands and gives back to the people and the city he loves.
A successful entrepreneur and industrialist, Mr Yu founded the Maxwell Electronics Limited in 1966 and has since been its Chairman and Director. With insightful business strategies, coupled with innovative designs, Mr Yu drove the fast expansion of Maxwell’s electronic product lines which quickly grew in popularity in Mainland China, forming a significant part of Hong Kong’s export earnings as well as the city’s economic expansion during its industrial era a few decades ago.
Beginning in 2012, Mr Yu pledged support for medical research through the establishment of four Endowed Professorships at HKU Faculty of Medicine in Virology; Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology; Anaesthesiology; and Breast Cancer. In 2022, Mr Yu further established the “Daniel and Mayce Yu Medical Development Fund” totalling $500M to provide the best possible teaching and learning opportunities, as well as research and knowledge exchange activities for our students, scientists and future medical and health practitioners. His faith and belief in us will thrust HKUMed further in making greater impact in medical and health sciences education and research. His continuous encouragement reminds us to keep reinventing ourselves, not just for Hong Kong but also China and the rest of the world. We are forever grateful to Mr Yu’s generosity.
Mr President, I present to you Mr Daniel CK Yu for the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa for all of his exceptional insights and leadership in championing the electronics industry and his copious philanthropic endeavours.
