The Right Honourable the Lord Butterfield is President of the Croucher Foundation in Hong Kong and was a member of the University and Polytechnic Grants Committee in the 1980s. In both capacities he contributed greatly towards the development of the University especially in the area of research. Lord Butterfield was Regius Professor of Physics at the University of Cambridge from 1976 to 1987. An expert on diabetes mellitus he has served on many committees including the World Health Organisation’s Committee on Diabetes, and the British Council’s Medical Advisory Committee and has made a significant contribution to the body of knowledge on the aetiology of diabetes. He has been Examiner in Medicine at Oxford University, the University of East Africa and Cambridge University and has been visiting professor at both Yale and Harvard Universities.
In recognition of his services to education, medical research and the promotion of healthcare, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa.
