Professor Tan Sri Guan Bee Ong, an MBBS graduate (in 1947) and a DSc graduate (in 1979) of the University, and Professor of Surgery in the University since 1964, has had a long and outstanding career in the medical profession. Before he joined the University, he was surgeon in charge of Kowloon Hospital from 1957 to 1963. At present, he is consultant surgeon to the Hong Kong government and the British Armed Forces in Hong Kong. Professor Ong also extends his services to other medical institutions and is honorary consultant surgeon of Grantham Hospital, Kwong Wah Hospital and Nam Long Hospital. He has made outstanding contributions to medical research and to the practice of surgery.

He has on numerous occasions been invited by overseas universities and professional bodies to act as Visiting Professor and Guest Lecturer, and has served regularly as examiner for the Fellowship examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He has served variously as President, Director, and member of many local and international professional bodies. He was awarded the first John Bruce Gold Medal Award of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and was appointed Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1970, and was awarded the medal of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1978.

In addition to other honours, Professor Ong, an unofficial Justice of the Peace, was awarded the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1966, and was awarded the Panglima Setia Mahkoha (the Malaysian equivalent of a British Knighthood) by His Majesty the King of Malaysia in 1979.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to academic research and the medical profession, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa.
