Professor Cheung Yau Kai OBE’s outstanding contribution to the field of civil engineering has earned him many national and international awards. He has also made a valuable contribution to the University of Hong Kong where he is Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor and has served in various prominent capacities since joining the University as Professor and Head of Civil Engineering in 1977. In 1978 he became Dean of Engineering, a position he held for nine years. From 1988 to 1998 he was Pro-Vice-Chancellor and was Acting Registrar from 1996 to 1998. Professor Cheung is a world-renowned authority in computational mechanics and the Finite Element Method in civil engineering. He has won numerous awards for his work and has been awarded many honorary professorships from Universities in mainland China. In 1987 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and in 1995 he was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE). In 1998 he won the International Association for Computational Mechanics Award and in 1990 and 1999 he won the National Natural Science Award. In 1999 he was elected a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In recognition of his services to the advancement of science and technology, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa.
