Mr John Henry Bremridge was educated at St John's College, Oxford, and made his career in the business world until his retirement from the Chairmanship of John Swire & Sons (HK) Ltd at the end of 1980. He became an unofficial member of the Legislative Council in 1974 and a member of the Executive Council in 1977, and has a long record of public service on a variety of advisory Boards and Councils .

As a member of the University and Polytechnic Grants Committee from 1975 and subsequently its Chairman during 1977 to 1980 he was closely involved with the development of university education in Hong Kong. Previous to appointment to that office he had also been closely associated with the University itself as a member of its Court, Council, and Finance Committee, as well as with its Robert Black College.

In recognition of his distinguished public service and especially for his service to higher education in Hong Kong as immediate past Chairman of the University and Polytechnic Grants Committee, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa.
