Haking WONG

Doctor of Laws
honoris causa

Mr Haking Wong is Chairman of the W Haking Enterprises Ltd which at present has a work force of 5,000 employees. Since his early twenties, Mr Wong has been involved in a number of industrial undertakings, and today the W Haking Enterprises is the only Hong Kong concern that has been able to penetrate the international commercial optical market which had till then been dominated by Japan and West Germany.

Mr Wong has been for many years the Honorary President of the Chinese Manufacturers Association and he is a member of the Founders' Committee of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries which has now become the organisation representing industries in Hong Kong.

Despite his heavy involvement in industrial development, Mr Wong has been very active in community work. He is a Director of both the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and Po Leung Kuk. He has also taken a keen interest in the technical training of the young and this led him to contribute substantially towards the building of a technical institute in Cheung Sha Wan, Kowloon. The institute, which was opened in September 1977, was subsequently named the Haking Wong Technical Institute in recognition of this generous donation.

Mr Wong was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1968 and he was appointed a member of the University Court in December 1978 .

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to industrial development in Hong Kong and the promotion of technical education and training, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa
