HUI Wai Haan

Doctor of Laws
honoris causa

Miss Hui Wai Haan was educated at the University of Hong Kong and this year completes a half century of her association with the University. She was admitted to the University in September 1928 and obtained her first degree in 1932 and a Master's degree in 1954. She progressed, with the interruption of the Japanese occupation, from Demonstrator to Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, and retired in June 1973. Since then she has remained actively associated with the Department as an Honorary Research Associate.

Miss Hui's work as a chemist is recorded in numerous papers on the chemistry of natural products derived from Hong Kong plants, while some of the work, which she helped to pioneer, is now carried on in the Chinese medicinal programme under the stimulus of the UNESCO Regional Network, many members of which were her students at one time or another.

In recognition of her life-long, devoted service to the University since her graduation in 1932, the University has resolved to confer upon her the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa.
