Mr Pei Ieoh Ming is one of the world's leading architects. A prolific designer, he has, in a career spanning 40 years, constructed major buildings in great cities and on university campuses in countries throughout the world.
Born in Guangzhou in 1917, Mr Pei is a naturalised citizen of the United States, having emigrated there in 1935. He graduated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and since 1955 has been a partner in the well-known New York architectural firm which bears his name. International recognition of his leadership in the architectural profession has resulted in honours from many professional and academic bodies. He is a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Mr Pei has designed more than 50 major buildings, including several of the largest civic and corporate projects in the United States. His designs exhibit a great concern for geometric form, as well as a mastery of the use of modern technology - as the Bank of China Building in Hong Kong so dramatically demonstrates.
In recognition of his services to architecture, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa.
