President Zhou Guangzhao is a theoretical physicist and President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences who contributed to designing China's first atomic and hydrogen bombs. He was born in 1929 and is a native of Hunan. After graduating from the Physics Department of Tsinghua University in 1951 and finishing graduate studies in theoretical physics at Beijing University, he was a researcher for the Dubra Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Moscow and after returning to China later became director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the president of the Academy from 1987.
He is a pioneer in the theory of spiral amplitude of particles and an advisor to research in detonation physics. President Zhou has also carried out research into radiation hydrodynamics and computing methods in mechanics. He was a co-winner of the 1st Prize Award for natural sciences issued by the State and has written more than 80 papers on physics.
In recognition of his contributions, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa.
