A leading figure in both business and arts Sir Joseph Hotung is a Director of the Hongkong Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) and former Chairman of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. He is Chairman and Managing Director of Guinness Investment Ltd and Ho Hung Hing Estates Ltd. Sir Joseph studied briefly at the University of Hong Kong from 1948 to 1949 and has remained loyal to his alma mater, serving as a member of the University Council, the Finance Committee and Board of Management of the School of Business, and Chairman of Board of Trustees, Staff Terminal Benefits Scheme. He devotes much time to his passion for the arts and is a trustee of the British Museum, a member of the visiting committee of the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington DC and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. He was made a Knight Bachelor in 1993, an Honorary Fellow of the University of Hong Kong in 1995. In 1996 he won the prestigious MontBlanc de la Culture Award, Hong Kong.
In recognition of his services to the community, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa.
