LEUNG Kau Kui

Doctor of Laws
honoris causa

Dr Leung Kau Kui was a respected figure in Hong Kong's banking and business sector and was also well known in the community for the support he gave over many years to social welfare, education and medical services. He was born in 1903 and joined the Hang Seng Bank as assistant manager in the mid-1940's to later assume responsibility for the operations of Dah Chong Hong in various parts of China and establish a chain of branches in various countries. He also sat on the boards of many business organisations ranging from hotels to investment companies and was still a director of the Hang Seng Bank at the time of his death.

His contributions to society include supporting the establishment of kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, health clinics and homes for the aged all over Hong Kong and in Shunde, his home town in Guangdong Province. He gave significant support to higher education, both in Hong Kong, China, and the United Kingdom. Among his three major donations in the territory, one was to the University of Hong Kong which led to an academic building having been named after him on the main campus. Most recently he contributed generously to Tsinghua University in Beijing to support the construction of its architecture building.

In recognition of his contributions, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa.
