Dr William Mong Man Wai is the Managing Director of the Shun Hing Group of Companies which in 1984 established the Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund that has contributed over $42 million in donations in previous years to educational and charitable organisations in Hong Kong. The Fund's recent donation of $10 million for the establishment of the William M W Mong Engineering Research Fund at the University of Hong Kong helped promote engineering research. Dr Mong has also been chairman of the Caritas Fund Raising Committee, a member of the board of directors of the Community Chest and a member of the Consultative Committee for the Basic Law.
In recognition of his services to the economy of Hong Kong, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa.
