Professor Lu Yongxiang is a world-renowned fluid power transmission and control specialist, the Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, PRC, and the President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Born in Ningbo, Zhejiang, China, Professor Lu graduated from Zhejiang University in 1964, and received his PhD in engineering from the Technical University of Aachen, Germany. The Fluid Power Transmission and Control Laboratory he set up on his return to Zhejiang University would later become the Institute of Power Transmission and Control, and was recognised as a State Key Laboratory. He became President of Zhejiang University in 1988.

Professor Lu is a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World. He received the Knight Commander's Cross (Badge and Star) from the Federal President of Germany in 2000, and has served as a member of the University Grants Committee in Hong Kong.

In recognition of his contributions to the discipline of engineering and to the nation, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa.
