SIU Yum Tong

Doctor of Science
honoris causa

A graduate of the University of Hong Kong, Professor Siu obtained his BA in Mathematics in 1963. As a mathematician he is widely regarded as being in the very front rank internationally in his research subject of several complex variables. This is a fast growing and difficult academic field which is of relevance to many aspects of studies in pure mathematics. Professor Siu's research findings have profoundly influenced the field in which he is working through his production of some 90 major research papers – an output quite remarkable for a pure mathematician.

Since obtaining his PhD from Princeton in 1966, Professor Siu has held at various times full professorships at Yale and Stanford Universities. His professorship at Harvard University is regarded as a particularly important one. He has also been a visiting professor at major universities outside the United States, and has given on two occasions the prestigious plenary address at the quadrennial International Congress of Mathematicians.

In recognition of his services to the world of mathematics, the University has resolved to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa.
