Dr Sing Yui King has been appointed Reader in Electrical Engineering from January 1960. Dr King first joined the staff of the University as a Demonstrator in 1940, after receiving the degree of BSc (Eng). At the outbreak of the Second World War he left Hong Kong for free China, and was there until April 1943 when he won a Federation of British Industries scholarship to England for a postgraduate apprenticeship in the GEC Limited. On the completion of this two-year's apprenticeship he entered Imperial College and was awarded the DIC and the degree of PhD by the University of London in 1947. He was elected Associate Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers in 1953. His research has been mainly in the field of electric power engineering.

In 1946 Dr King rejoined the University as Junior Lecturer and was promoted to a Lectureship in 1953 and again to a Senior Lectureship in 1955. He was Dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 1954 to 1957.
