The University of Hong Kong (HKU) held a ceremony today (October 25) to present Honorary University Fellowships to three distinguished individuals, in recognition of their contributions to the University and to the community. HKU Pro-Chancellor Dr the Honourable Sir David Li Kwok Po presided at the ceremony. 

The Fellowships are a means for the University community to thank and salute the lives of those who have made important contributions in their own unique ways to the University, to academia, and to Hong Kong. The Honorary University Fellowships was established in 1995 to reaffirm the University's link between town and gown.

Biographies:

Professor CHOW Shew Ping

Professor Chow Shew Ping is a distinguished professor of orthopaedic surgery and a respected leader in Hong Kong’s higher education sector.

Professor Chow holds MBBS and MS degrees from HKU. He joined the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1973, while continuing with his specialty training in orthopaedic surgery in Hong Kong, Canada, United Kingdom, and USA from 1972 to 1977. He advanced to Senior Lecturer, Reader, and eventually Chair Professor in 1990. Professor Chow has been Emeritus Professor since 2015.

Professor Chow is world-renowned for his contributions to orthopaedic surgery, particularly in upper limb surgery and microsurgery, with over 150 publications on these areas. He performed the first successful microsurgical replantation of a severed thumb in Hong Kong in 1977, and his experimental repair of blood vessels of 0.15 mm diameter is still a world record.

Professor Chow was Dean of Medicine from 1995-1998 during which he initiated a curriculum reform with far-reaching effect on the whole sector of tertiary education. Professor Chow served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor twice: from 2000-2001, taking charge of staffing matters; and from 2008-2014 in charge of Institutional Advancement.

Professor Chow is a Fellow of the Hong Kong College of Orthopaedic Surgery and of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. He has been involved with many voluntary and charity activities, and has worked as a volunteer surgeon around the world and in Hong Kong. He is the Honorary President of the Hong Kong Physical Handicapped and Able-Bodied Association, and was involved as advisor to Red Cross, the Salvation Army and NGO’s in special education. He has also served on numerous statutory and non-statutory bodies.

Professor Chow was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1995 and awarded a Silver Bauhinia Star in 2012.

Ms Maisy HO

Ms Maisy Ho Chiu Ha is the Executive Director of Shun Tak Holdings Limited, a conglomerate listed in Hong Kong with core businesses in property, transportation, hospitality and investments.

Ms Ho holds a BA in Telecommunications and a BA in Psychology from Pepperdine University, USA.

With her firm belief that preparing for the future begins with nurturing the younger generation today, Ms Ho is dedicated to promoting youth development through collaboration with academic institutions, non-profit organisations and NGOs. As Honorary Chairman of the Hong Kong Future Star Federation of Students since 2010, she promotes youth exchange activities between Mainland China and Hong Kong to broaden teenagers’ horizons and help them build a positive attitude towards life.

At HKU, Ms Ho continues her family’s distinguished philanthropic tradition of supporting the University’s endeavours through the Shun Tak Holdings - Dr Stanley Ho Hung Sun Foundation, which sponsored the ‘Hong Kong Summit of Global Health Leaders’ in 2017, the signature academic event of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine’s 130th anniversary celebrations.

Ms Ho currently serves as a Member of the Board of Trustees at New Asia College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a Council Member of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

She has served as a Member and Chairman of the Board of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, during which she spearheaded initiative after initiative to contribute to social good including helping the disadvantaged in Hong Kong. She also pledges her support for civic responsibilities, and serves as a Member of the Equal Opportunities Commission, and of the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education.

Ms Ho was awarded a Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2016.

Professor LEE Chack Fan

Professor Lee Chack Fan is a distinguished professor of geotechnical engineering and a renowned leader in Hong Kong’s higher education sector.

Professor Lee holds a BEng (CivE) (first class honours) and a MSc (Eng) from HKU, and a PhD from the University of Western Ontario, Canada. He has worked on hydropower, energy and transportation projects in Canada and China for over 40 years, including projects like the Three Gorges, Ertan, Lijiaxia and others across China. He is the author of over 300 engineering publications and some 20 literary books.

From 1994 to his retirement in 2015, he has served the University as a Chair Professor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), Pro-Vice-Chancellor (University Relations) and Director of HKU SPACE. He is currently Emeritus Professor and Deputy Chairman of the HKU Foundation.

Since its establishment in 2003, Professor Lee has served as the Director of the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole, a world class research institute for Chinese cultural studies, founded by the legendary scholar Professor Jao Tsung-I, University Laureate. Professor Lee is also an expert in the history and development of Buddhism, and helped establish the University’s Centre of Buddhist Studies in 2000.

Professor Lee is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and a Fellow and former President of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Science. He is a Fulbright Distinguished Scholar and has received the Gold Medal of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. He holds honorary degrees from the University of Western Ontario, Plymouth University, Edinburgh Napier University, University of Macau and the Open University of Hong Kong. He is very active in public service and has served on numerous government committees.

Professor Lee was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 2003, and awarded a Silver Bauhinia Star in 2005 and a Gold Bauhinia Star in 2013.
