Dr Yeung graduated from HKU with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering in 1971 and a Master of Business Administration in 1985, followed by a Doctoral of Business Administration degree from Macquarie University in Australia in 2004.
After graduating from HKU, he joined the Hong Kong Government as a Civil Engineer in the Public Works Department, and over the next three decades, he would hold a series of key leadership and top management positions in some of the most respected investment and development corporations.

Throughout his career, he has strived for total quality performance and management excellence for the construction industry in Hong Kong. But even as we admire Dr Yeung’s professional accomplishments, we must also recognise his community service and, indeed, his warmth and philanthropy.
Dr Yeung worked tirelessly with his late wife, Lorene, on funding and mobilizing financial assistance in support of ethnic minority youth of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in Mainland China. The funds raised were used for building primary schools and student hostels for children inthis remote area, helping them to pursue tertiary education or vocational training.
Dr Yeung is also a Founding Member of the Council of Management of the Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge to China) Charitable Foundation, supported by the Ministry of Construction of Mainland China to actualize sustainable footbridge projects in remote villages by mobilizing university students, professionals and volunteers.
He was also a key supporter of the Mingde Project, partnering with HKU teaching staff and students from the Department of Civil Engineering.
Ladies and gentlemen, if I might draw your attention to a particular request from Dr Yeung.
He particularly wishes us to know what an enormous role his late wife played in all his voluntary and charitable works. Both Dr Yeung and Lorene were HKU mentors, and she was party to his collaborations with the HKU Department of Civil Engineering.
Dr Yeung himself puts it very simply (and I quote): “Without her, I would not be who I am and thus awarded this Fellowship.”
It gives me great pleasure, Mr Pro-Chancellor, to present Dr Yeung Nicolas Shu Yan for the Honorary University Fellowship, in recognition of his contributions to Hong Kong and academia.
