Our Team
A dedicated team of researchers and scientists advancing biomedical imaging and signal processing at the University of Hong Kong.
Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering • Lam Woo Professorship • Principal Investigator
Prof. Ed X. Wu is Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering and holds the Lam Woo Professorship in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Hong Kong. He received his PhD from UC Irvine University and has been at HKU since 2003 after a stint in Columbia University, where he was the lead technical member in development of the world first 3D positron emission tomography (PET) system and an ultrahigh field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. His current research encompasses MRI physics, data acquisition and image reconstruction algorithms through intelligent computing, and ultra-low-field MRI engineering to widen MRI utility in healthcare.
His pioneering work also spans the study of large-scale brain circuits and functions through high-field functional MRI, optogenetic modulation, electrophysiology, and computational modelling. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed journal papers and has been recognized with numerous international awards.
Co-PI • Research Assistant Professor
Dr. Alex T. L. Leong received his B.Eng. in Medical Engineering from the University of Hong Kong in 2013 before completing his Ph.D. training with Prof. Ed X. Wu in Biomedical Engineering from the same university in 2017. He is presently a Co-PI of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Biomedical Imaging and Signal Processing. He is an expert in preclinical rodent imaging, particularly optogenetics with functional MRI (fMRI) in interrogating brain networks and functions. He is an elected Junior Fellow of ISMRM (2019).
Co-PI • Research Assistant Professor
Dr. Yujiao Zhao received the Ph.D degree from The University of Hong Kong in 2022, and MSc and BSc degrees from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in 2015 and 2012, respectively, all in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Her research interests include MRI physics and engineering, and MRI signal processing. She won Magna Cum Laude Merit Awards from ISMRM in 2022 and 2019. She is an elected Junior Fellow of ISMRM (2025).
Co-PI • Research Assistant Professor
Dr. Man Hin Lau (Vick) is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Hong Kong. He received his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from HKU in 2024 and his MEng in Biomedical Engineering from Imperial College London in 2019. His research focuses on developing and applying AI methods for MR image reconstruction and restoration, as well as utilising AI to analyse neuroimaging data to advance understanding of brain.
