Professor LU Sin
Citation

Citation for Professor Lu Sin delivered by Professor M S M Ip, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Honorary University Fellowships presentation ceremony on December 12, 2000:

Professor Lu Sin has long played an important role in Asia's booming economies. He is the founder, chairman and managing director of South Asia Textiles Ltd. But apart from his significant achievements in the world of business Professor Lu has actively participated in public and social services.

Professor Lu graduated from Chao Yang University, in Beijing, in 1946, with a major in Economics. As an entrepreneur, in the 1950s, he made a number of wise investments in Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong and mainland China.

During the past 20 years he has actively participated in the infrastructural developments in his home town in Fujian where he has developed over 1.2 miles of land, established more than ten modern factories and employs a workforce of over 20,000 people. He has also built schools and hospitals.

But apart from these commercial activities Professor Lu has been instrumental in supporting cultural and educational activities. In China alone he and his company have made donations of over RMB 150 million to establish more than 150 schools and scholarships. He is currently honorary professor at a number of universities in China, including the China Academy of Social Science, the China People's University, and Wuhan University.

His generosity to the field of education does not end there. Professor Lu is a Director of the University of Hong Kong Foundation for Educational Development and Research and is a member of the University Court. Most recently he has helped fund a visiting professorship in Traditional Chinese Medicine at HKU.

There is no doubt that Professor Lu Sin's contributions to the community and to our University, in particular, will have a lasting and positive impact.

Mr Pro-Chancellor it gives me immense pleasure to present Professor Lu Sin to receive an Honorary University Fellowship in recognition of his contributions to the University and the community.
