Citation

Citation for Professor Richard Yu delivered by Professor S K Lam, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Honorary University Fellowships Presentation Ceremony on December 12, 2002:

Professor Richard Yu has enjoyed a long and rewarding medical career, devoting much of his energy to ensuring that physicians trained in Hong Kong receive a world-class education.

A graduate of the University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Medicine, Professor Yu held the position of lecturer and, subsequently, senior lecturer in the Department of Medicine, from 1966 to 1973.

During that time he founded the Division of Nephrology in the Department and has continued to maintain close links with his alma mater through his service as Honorary Clinical Lecturer until 1997, Honorary Clinical Associate Professor from 1997 to 2001 and Honorary Professor, since July last year.

Professor Yu is the Foundation Fellow of the Hong Kong College of Physicians and is currently its President- a position he has held since 1998. During his service as Member and Chairman of the Education and Accreditation Committee of the HKCP he has played a major role in establishing training guidelines for physicians. The availability of these guidelines has contributed significantly to the enhancement of postgraduate training.

Indeed, he has been instrumental in ensuring that the training and education of physicians in Hong Kong has been acknowledged to gain international standards.

He has served the community in many capacities. He is a member of the Board of Governors of the Ruttonjee Hospital, a Council member of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and former Honorary Treasurer and Founding Member of the Hong Kong Society of Nephrology.

Mr Pro-Chancellor, it gives me enormous pleasure to present Professor Richard Yu for the Honorary University Fellowship in recognition of his contributions to the University and to Hong Kong.
