2001 Honorary University Fellow
Mr KWOK Sau Po
Citation

Citation for Mr Kwok Sau Po delivered by Professor C L W Chan, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Honorary University Fellowships Presentation Ceremony on December 13, 2001:

Mr Kwok Sau Po is founder of Golden Electric Trading Corporation and is currently Chairman of its Board of Directors and CEO.

As a dedicated and much-admired philanthropist he lives by the firm belief that what is taken from the community should be used for the benefit of the community. Over the years he has supported numerous charities to help the needy in Hong Kong and Mainland China.

Education and the preservation of China's cultural heritage have been two of his consuming passions. Mr Kwok has made generous donations towards the building of schools, hospitals, old age homes and nurseries.

Over the past 20 years his interest in China’s cultural heritage has prompted him to buy valuable Chinese antiques dispersed across the world and donated them to museums in China. He has given 110 treasures, valued at HK$9 million, to the Museum of Beijing University and has made a similar donation of HK$6 million worth of pottery to the Hong Kong Museum of Arts.

The development of education and the social services in Hong Kong have also benefited from Mr Kwok's philanthropy. He has made generous contributions to the Save The Children Funds, the Hong Kong Blind Union and the Kowloon Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society. The University of Hong Kong has also been a recipient of his magnanimity: Mr Kwok has donated HK$500,000 to the Department of Clinical Oncology to support Chinese Medicine research into cancer. He has recently invested HK$12 million to establish a joint research venture on cancer gene therapy between our Department of Clinical Oncology and the Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Research Institute of the Second Military Medical University, in Shanghai.

He has also given HK$11 million to our Foundation for Educational Development and Research and is a diamond sponsor of our 90th anniversary celebrations.

Mr Pro-Chancellor, in view if his astounding contributions to society and to this University, it gives me very great pleasure to present Mr Kwok for the Honorary University Fellowship.
