Honorary University Fellows
Citation delivered by the Dean of Education, Professor Shirley Grundy:
Mr Yeung Pak Sing is a native of Fujian Province and came to Hong Kong in 1962 at the age of 13. He studied at HKU and was conferred a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1973 and a Masters degree in Industrial Engineering in 1980.
In 1976, Mr Yeung began a 17-year career in the China Light & Power Company Limited. In 1992, he established his own company and raised funds to invest in power stations in Fujian and Jiangsu Provinces to address the growing demand for power on the Mainland.
But even before Mr Yeung’s ascent to illustrious professional success, his student years at HKU would have a profound effect on him. For while studying at HKU, he was actively involved in the activities of the Engineering Society and Independent Clubs Association. After graduation, he and other active alumni founded the Hong Kong University Graduates Association (HKUGA), with the aim of promoting friendship, professionalism, and unity among alumni, and to serve their alma mater and the community.
During his Presidency of HKUGA, Mr Yeung mobilized his fellow alumni to found a charitable organization in 2001 – the Hong Kong University Graduates Association Education Foundation, to promote quality education in Hong Kong.
The Foundation has successfully established two Direct Subsidy Schools, the HKUGA Primary School and the HKUGA College, to provide holistic education and to nurture lively, inquiring, discerning and creative students.
He also personally led the founding of the HKUGA Primary School and was chair of the School Management Committee in the first three years of the school’s operation. In collaboration with the HKU Faculty of Education, these schools have adopted new teaching and learning concepts, and have become model schools in the education reform.
Mr Yeung continues to demonstrate great loyalty to his alma mater and has served as a member of the Convocation Standing Committee, of Court and of Council.
It gives me great pleasure, Mr Pro-Chancellor, to present Mr Yeung Pak Sing for the Honorary University Fellowship, in recognition of his contributions to Hong Kong and academia.
