Citation

Citation for Mr Moses Cheng delivered by Professor Johannes M M Chan, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Honorary University Fellowships Presentation Ceremony on December 16, 2003:

Mr Moses Cheng, a practicing solicitor and senior partner of Messrs P.C. Woo and Company, is an alumnus of the University and a keen supporter of our activities.

Born in Hong Kong and educated at this University where he received his Bachelor of Laws in 1972 and Postgraduate Certificate in Laws in 1973, Mr Cheng has distinguished himself as an active member of the Hong Kong community.

He has been admitted and enrolled as a solicitor of the Supreme Courts of Hong Kong and England and as a solicitor and barrister of the Supreme Court of Victoria, Australia and the Supreme Court of Singapore.

He is a former member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong and was made a Justice of the Peace in 1996. The following year he received an OBE and, this year, was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star by the Government of the SAR.

His far-reaching contributions to the community are too many to mention here. Suffice it to say education and the arts have been two of his priorities. He served as the Chairman of the Board of Education between 1996 to 2002. On the merge of the Board of Education with the Education Commission he continues to serve as a member of the Education Commission of Hong Kong. He is the Chairman of the Council and Court of the Hong Kong Baptist University, Chairman of Opera Hong Kong and a member of the Council of the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.

He has been equally loyal to his alma mater where he serves as a member of the Court and of the Standing Committee of the University of Hong Kong Convocation.

It gives me great pleasure, Mr Pro-Chancellor, to present Mr Moses Cheng for the Honorary University Fellowship in recognition of his contributions to Hong Kong and the University.
