Mr James HUGHES-HALLETT
2002 Honorary University Fellow
Mr James HUGHES-HALLETT
Citation

Citation for Mr James Hughes-Hallett delivered by Professor R Y C Wong, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics at the Honorary University Fellowships Presentation Ceremony on December 12, 2002:

Born and educated in England, Mr James Hughes-Hallett graduated from Oxford in 1970 with a degree in English Literature. He went on to become a Fellow of the Society of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and joined the Swire Group in 1976.

He has made Hong Kong his home since 1993 when he was transferred here, from Australia, to take up the position of director, responsible for the Swire Group's ship-owning and consumer trading interests. He assumed his current responsibilities as chairman of Swire Pacific, Cathay Pacific Airways and John Swire & Sons (Hong Kong) Ltd, in 1999.

Despite his many professional commitments he manages to find time to serve the community of Hong Kong in many capacities. He is a Council member of the University of Hong Kong, of the Trade Development Council and of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

He is patron of the Community Advice Bureau and a member of the Advisory Board of the Red Cross. He is also an advisor to the Employers' Federation of Hong Kong and a director of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation.

He also lends his advice as a member of the Hong Kong/Japan Business Co-operation Committee, the Hong Kong/US Business Council of the Trade Development Council, the General Committee of the General Chamber of Commerce, the Aviation Advisory Board and the Port Maritime Board.

Mr Pro-Chancellor, it gives me great pleasure to present Mr James Hughes-Hallett for the Honorary University Fellowship in recognition of his contributions to the University and to Hong Kong.
