Ir Francis Shu Ying Bong is an alumnus of the University of Hong Kong and currently the Director and Chairman/Asia of AECOM, one of the largest engineering design firms in the world.

He has served in the Hong Kong Government, the Provincial Government of British Columbia, Canada, and was Chairman and CEO of Maunsell Consulting Engineering in Hong Kong.

Over the past four decades, Mr Bong has been involved in numerous infrastructure development projects of monumental scale in Hong Kong.

He was personally responsible for the design and construction supervision of several new towns in the eastern part of Hong Kong, major highways and bridges, and the master plan for the Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok.

Mr Bong is a Member of the Construction Industry Council and of the Advisory Committee on Admission of Quality Migrants and Professionals.

He has served as Chairman of the Association of Consulting Engineers in Hong Kong, the Overseas Representative of the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK) in Hong Kong, President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and is currently President of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences.

Mr Bong is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers (UK).

Closer to home, he has served as a Member of this University’s Council, is Chairman of the HKU Engineering Advisory Committee and an active mentor to our students.

He strongly believes in the need to strengthen the skills of young local engineers, to enable them to play an effective and responsible role as leaders in the engineering field.

Mr Bong has a special interest in the training of graduate engineers and has been Chairman of the Training Sub- committee and represented the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers on the Engineering Training Committee of the Vocational Training Council.

In recent years, he has been promoting Hong Kong consulting engineering firms in Mainland China and looking for more opportunities for Hong Kong engineers to practice there.

An avid supporter of HKU, Mr Bong is a Founding Honorary Patron of the HKU Foundation, and has supported many of the University’s development activities, most recently with an Endowed Professorship in Engineering in his name.

It gives me great pleasure, Mr Pro-Chancellor, to present Ir Francis Shu Ying Bong for the Honorary University Fellowship, in recognition of his contributions to Hong Kong and academia.
