Honorary University Fellows
Citation delivered by the Dean of Business and Economics, Professor Gary Biddle:
Dr Chan Sui Kau is a prominent industrialist and philanthropist, founder of Yangtzekiang Garment Ltd and of YGM Group, and he is one of the leading marketers and builders of apparel brands in Asia.
Dr Chan was elected President of the Federation of Hong Kong Garment Manufacturers in 1977 and he is currently its Life Honorary President. He also helped found the Textile Council of Hong Kong in 1988, serving as its first Chairman and he remains its Honorary Chairman today. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1983, awarded an OBE in 1988 and the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2002. He holds Honorary Doctorates from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the City University of Hong Kong.
The University is particularly gratified by Dr Chan’s strong belief in the value of education and his magnanimous support of academia. As just one example, Dr Chan helped found the China Synergy Programme for Outstanding Youth in 1999 that enables ethnic Chinese students who are attending renowned overseas universities to visit Hong Kong, Macau and the Mainland to learn first-hand about the current socio-economic, technological and cultural developments of China. This programme, now in its eighth year, has had a profound influence on Chinese and overseas Chinese communities alike.
Dr Chan also has a long record of distinguished public service, offering his counsel on various Government boards, and he was a member of the 8th and 9th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Committee from 1993 to 2003.
It gives me great pleasure, Mr Pro-Chancellor, to present Dr Chan Sui Kau for the Honorary University Fellowship, in recognition of his contributions to Hong Kong and academia.
