Honorary University Fellows

Dr Lawrence Ming Loy NG is a paediatrician and the Managing Partner of the Paediatric Medical Associates of East Bay.
Dr Ng was born in Hong Kong, attended King’s College and graduated from the University of Hong Kong with an MBBS degree. In the United States, Dr Ng did his paediatric residency and paediatric cardiology fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and Children’s Hospital in Oakland, California, and established his paediatric clinic in 1972. As the number and healthcare needs of new immigrants from Hong Kong and China grew, he started a second clinic in Oakland’s Chinatown in 1982. He formed the Paediatric Medical Associates of East Bay in 1990 and today remains its Managing Partner.
In today’s globally interconnected world, we often speak about ‘global citizenship’. And at HKU, we of course often refer to our ‘HKU Family’. I believe these two concepts come together in the person of Dr Ng. He is very much a global ambassador for his alma mater and one of its most active and enthusiastic alumni.
He has devoted years to building up and strengthening the University’s alumni networks throughout the world, particularly in the United States and Canada. No wonder that he is often fondly referred to as ‘The Alumni Leader’ of Northern California.
He was one of the founding members of the HKU Alumni Association, Northern California Chapter in 1991, served as its President and is currently its Secretary and Board Chair. Dr Ng is also the President and a founding member of the Board of Directors of ‘Friends of HKU Ltd’, the University’s first and only offshore fundraising arm.
This is not to say that Dr Ng is solely focused on old times and old-timers, worthy though these may be. Dr Ng is also an active overseas HKU Mentor, and has for years made time to guide exchange students from HKU studying at US universities. Who better to help them to learn and live in a new culture and society, than one of the HKU Family’s most experienced global citizens?
Dr Ng was one of the founding members of the Chinese American Physicians Society, has served on the board of directors of many professional organizations and was elected Fellow of the American Academy of Paediatrics in 1973.
It gives me great pleasure, Mr Pro-Chancellor, to present Dr Lawrence Ming Loy NG for the Honorary University Fellowship, in recognition of his contributions to Hong Kong and academia.
