Biography

An excerpt from the Vice-Chancellor's Address delivered at the Honorary University Fellowships Presentation Ceremony on December 11, 1997:

Dr Kan Lai Bing whose service with the University Libraries has been a long and illustrious one dating back to 1959 when she first joined HKU. In 1973 she quit her position as Deputy Librarian to take up the position of University Librarian and Director of the Library System at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. However, after eleven years of service there Dr Kan returned to HKU as University Librarian in 1983. During the past 14 years Dr Kan has brought about major changes to our library to transform it into a vital learning centre for teaching, research and continuing education. Dr Kan has also contributed significantly to the raising of funds for the University. Over the years she has attracted sizable sums for the development of the University Libraries. In addition to being a senior University Officer, a professional librarian and an administrator, Dr Kan has a great interest in academic research which has resulted in a number of books and articles published locally and overseas.
