Dr LO Ka Shui
Citation

Citation for Dr Lo Ka Shui delivered by Professor S K Lam, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Honorary University Fellowships Presentation Ceremony on December 12, 2002:

Dr Lo Ka Shui was born in Hong Kong and pursued further education in Canada where he graduated from McGill University, with a BSc in Biophysics. Four years later, in 1974, he graduated as a Doctor of Medicine from Cornell University. He trained and specialised in internal medicine and cardiology, continuing his research in nuclear cardiology at the University of Michigan Hospital, until 1979.

But his bond with his home city remained strong and a year later he returned to Hong Kong to join the Board of Great Eagle Holdings, one of Hong Kong’s leading property and hotel companies. Today, he is its Deputy Chairman and Managing Director.

He is also a non-executive director of the Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation, Shanghai Industrial Holdings, Phoenix Satellite Television and China Mobile.

But throughout his years in Hong Kong he has remained dedicated to promoting healthcare and has played an instrumental role in the development of the Hospital Authority, of which he was Chairman from 2000 until September this year.

He has also contributed widely to the community through his support and membership of various organisations. He is Vice-President of the Real Estate Developers Association, Trustee of the Hong Kong Centre for Economic Research, a member of the Long Term Housing Strategy Advisory Committee, a member of the Council of Advisors on Innovation and Technology, a Director of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd and Chairman of the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM) Listing Committee. He also served as Chairman of the Main Board Listing Committee of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange for four years from 1992 to 1996, and he was founding Chairman of the GEM Board from 1998 to 2000.

Mr Pro-Chancellor, it gives me immense pleasure to present Dr Lo Ka Shui for the Honorary University Fellowship in recognition of his contributions to Hong Kong.
