Citation

Citation for Dr Leong Che Hung delivered by Professor S K Lam, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Honorary University Fellowships Presentation Ceremony on December 13, 2001:

Dr Leong Che Hung’s contributions to healthcare and the community of Hong Kong are wide and varied. He graduated from the Medical Faculty of this University in 1962 and served consecutively as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader in the Department of Surgery from 1966 to 1978. Despite leaving us for pastures new he has maintained close links with his alma mater as a member of the Executive Committee of the HKU Medical Alumni Association.

In the 1980s he came to prominence in the public arena by helping to prepare Hong Kong for the return of sovereignty to China. For 12 years from 1988 he served as a member of the Legislative Council, representing the Medical Functional Constituency.

He has made lasting contributions to Hong Kong’s healthcare sector. He played an instrumental role in the establishment of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and is currently its President. He was also involved in drawing up the blueprint for Hospital Authority, taking special responsibility for Medical Service Development.

Dr Leong is the founder of the kidney Foundation and the Kidney Action Group which promotes vital organ donation. He also founded the International Drug Abuse Treatment Foundation to study the efficacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in treating addiction. As Chairman of the Hong Kong AIDS Foundation, he spearheads a Beijing Hong Kong AIDS Cooperation and the China AIDS network to help promote the necessary AIDS education for workers in China. He is Chairman of the Society for the Promotion of Hospice Care and has consolidated the Asia Pacific Hospice Palliative Care Network, establishing a foothold for hospice service in the Asia Pacific region.

In view of his contributions to the community and the University, Mr Pro-Chancellor, it gives me very pleasure to present Dr C H Leong for the Honorary University Fellowships.
