Bringing Out the Best in Young Writers
Hong Kong Central & Western District and Southern District Youth Chinese Writing Competition 2007 was held from September to October, 2007. The competition was jointly organized by HKU, the Chinese Language Society of Hong Kong, the Education Bureau and the Federation of Parent-Teacher Associations of the Central and Western District, and sponsored by the Central & Western District Council.
The Competition aimed to help students build their creative writing skills in Chinese, and to promote interaction and communication between the University and the residents in Central & Western District and Southern District. It was targeted at all full-time students of F.4 or above, who either resided or studied in the two districts.
The Competition received an enthusiastic response, with 262 submissions altogether. The main subject in the essays focused on the integration of HKU and the local community, and the titles were decided by individual contestants. The essays were graded by three adjudicators before they came up with a list of winners:
Junior Category (F.4 and F.5 students):
First Prize : Lam Tat Chung (King’s College)
Second Prize: Lai Hin Ting (St. Joseph’s College)
Third Prize: Leung Yik Lok, Laurence (King’s College)
Senior Category (F.6, F.7 and undergraduate students):
First Prize: So Ying Ching (St. Paul’s Co-Educational College)
Second Prize: Luk Sze Suen (HKU SPACE)
Third Prize: Chan Man Sze (HKU)
A prize presentation ceremony was held on December 22, 2007 at HKU. Professor Lo Wai-luen, renowned Chinese writer and the Director of the Centre for Hong Kong Cultural Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, was invited to the ceremony and had a dialogue with young people on “Writing Prose”.
