Facilities

The central equipment in the BISP lab is a 7T PharmaScan, a high-field NMR imaging system. It is manufactured by the world’s leading vendor in NMR technology - Bruker Biospin GmbH, Germany. This equipment offers the most advanced capabilities to study soft tissue structures and functions in rodents. It consists of an actively shielded 7 Tesla horizontal superconducting magnet with a 16 cm bore.

The system is tailored for microscopic, spectroscopic, water diffusion, dynamic cardiac, hemodynamic, a warm bore, and functional imaging.

It provides the following imaging capabilities:

  • Conventional NMR imaging methods (GE, SE, RARE, DWI, with various contrast modules)
  • Advanced NMR imaging methods and software (EPI, and angiograph)
  • Advanced spectroscopic imaging methods (PRESS, STEAM, and CSI)
  • Advanced data processing software package (2D and 3D image processing, and data manager)
  • Hardware dedicated for imaging mice and rats (animal handling & physiologic monitoring)

These imaging capabilities permit the state-of-the-art in vivo NMR study of various organs and systems, including but not limited to brain, heart, liver, kidney, muscle, and cartilage, etc.
