Heritage Buildings Get a New Start

The protection of the environment and our heritage is one of our key planning principles for the new campus. This includes our commitment to the conservation of the three heritage buildings on the site: the Senior Staff Quarters (SSQ), the Workmen’s Quarters (WQ) and the Elliot Treatment Works (ETW) of the Water Supplies Department.

After consulting staff, students, alumni and the general public, it was confirmed that the SSQ will house the Hong Kong University Press, with part of it converted into exhibition spaces for the University. The WQ will become the University’s Visitor Centre and will be managed by the China Affairs Office of the Registry. Discussion between HKU and WSD on the future use of the ETW are still continuing.

The Architect, Wong and Ouyang (HK) Ltd., is currently preparing the plans for submission to the Antiquities and Monuments Office and other relevant departments. The revitalized buildings will be in operation when the new campus opens in mid-2012.
