Lung Wah Street Student Hostel

To address the limited availability of hostel places, a new student hostel complex is being built on Lung Wah Street in the Western District. The complex includes four blocks of residences, 22 to 25 storeys high. This 1,800-place hostel will be in operation in the 2012-13 academic year, representing a 50% increase in student resident places.

The former Hon Wah Middle School

The University acquired the former Hon Wah Middle School premises on the tranquil Ching Lin Terrace, and intends to convert it into a postgraduate student residence. The school was built in 1965 and has been an important part of the collective memory of the community. It is also in close proximity to the Lo Pan Temple which is a Grade 1 historic building, built in 1884. HKU has proposed revitalising this building and has gained the unanimous support of the Central and Western District Council. HKU hopes to obtain the support of the Buildings Department and the Town Planning Board in preserving the building – rather than pulling it down and rebuilding it – and thereby minimizing the impact on nearby residents.
