Issue No.6 - November 2009
Amenities of the new campus proposed
Campus life is much more than studying. What will be the future amenities of the new campus?

The Working Group on Amenities was formed in late 2008 to study and recommend the provision of amenities in the future Centennial Campus as well as the Main Campus. Members include two student representatives from the Students’ Union and the Postgraduate Student Association.

An online survey of staff and students was conducted in early 2009 on the preferred amenities for both campuses. Of the 534 responses received, the different types of amenities suggested are listed below, in order of priority:

 Priority

 Facilities

 1

 Food Court

 2

 Canteen Cafeteria

 3

 Supermarket

 4

 Bank

 5

 Book Store

 6

 Rest/Waiting Area

 7

 Coffee and Snack Lounge

 8

 IT Support Centre

 9

 Fitness Centre

Based on the survey results, the following amenities are proposed to be included in the Centennial Campus:

Food and Beverage Outlets: There will be five food outlets at different levels throughout the Centennial Campus. The outlets will be medium-sized, similar to the existing Starbucks or Oliver’s Super Sandwiches.

Convenience Store: In response to the large demand for supermarkets, a convenience store will be located at the ground level of the new campus.

Bank: Banking service will be provided at the new campus.

Fitness Centre: A fitness centre with an area of about 300 square metres will be provided. This is much larger than the existing one at the Global Lounge.

Bookstore: There will be a sizeable bookstore in the Centennial Campus which reflects our status as a world-class university. With an area of more than 500 m2, the bookstore will sell not only textbooks, but also a full collection of academic publications, magazines, and popular bestsellers.

Special Purpose Room: to fulfil the needs of international students of different ethnicity and religious affiliations, a ‘quiet room’ will be set up for student bookings. It can be used for praying, meditation, or other forms of worship.

The above suggestions are preliminary and may be subject to change. If you have any comments, please email to us at ccviews@hku.hk.
