Citation

Citation delivered by the Dean of Medicine, Professor S K Lam:

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Professor Lee Kin Hung studied medicine at the University of Hong Kong and graduated in 1958 with Distinction in Pharmacology, before pursuing further postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynaecology both in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. He has been Senior Medical and Health Officer in the Hong Kong Government, on the Council of the Hong Kong Medical Association for more than twenty years, and has also been a long-standing member of the Medical Council of Hong Kong.

Professor Lee was a local pioneer in his discipline, and his 1971 thesis on 'The Use of Amnioscopy and Foetal Blood Sampling in the Diagnosis of Foetal Distress' not only earned him an MD from this University, but the procedure has also become the gold standard in the diagnosis of intrapartum foetal hypoxia. But far from being an inaccessible medical specialist, Professor Lee was also a pioneer at public health education, reaching out to the general public. His regular appearance in the RTHK series, 'Doctor and You', earned him the household name of 'the TV Doctor'.

The University in particular is grateful to Professor Lee for enthusiastically sharing his experience and expertise with us for close to forty years. He has done so, first, with our students, as a Senior Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from 1969 to 1975, and as an Honorary Clinical Assistant Professor since 1998; and he has also lent his support to the University as a whole, as a Member of the Standing Committee of HKU Convocation, and as a Member of the University's Court.

It gives me great pleasure, Mr Pro-Chancellor, to present Professor Lee Kin Hung for the Honorary University Fellowship, in recognition of his contributions to Hong Kong and the University.
