Honorary University Fellows
An excerpt from the Vice-Chancellor's Address delivered at the Honorary University Fellowships Presentation Ceremony on December 11, 1997:
Dr Lee Shiu, Chairman and Managing Director of Shum Wan Marine Co Ltd, is an honorary member of the University of Hong Kong Foundation for Educational Development and Research and a generous benefactor of the University. Born in the turbulent years of the Second World War his education was interrupted and he was only able to receive three and a half years out of the regular six at high school. He overcame this handicap with private tuition and went on to further studies at Lingnan University in Guangzhou, Southern China followed by the University of California at Berkeley where he obtained his Bachelor and Master’s degrees. He gained his PhD at Yale. Following his academic pursuits in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering he went on to a career in the Paint Manufacturing Industry in Hong Kong. This was followed by a second career in education during which he taught at Chung Chi College, now part of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Ohio Northern University. Before returning to Hong Kong to join his father’s firm Dr Lee spent five years working as a research chemist in New York. Despite dabbling in several different careers Dr Lee has now returned to the one he found most rewarding – that of education and service to young people. He has made donations to various educational organisations and generously bestowed many scholarships and prizes on students at the University of Hong Kong.
