Closure of West Gate on 5 Jun 2010 due to tree transplant

Due to the construction of the West Island Line by the MTR Corporation, two banyan trees (named ET15 and ET16) below the Haking Wong stairs would need to be removed.

Protection of the environment and heritage is one of the key principles of our campus development. Tree preservation is of course a top priority for this University.

Although MTR has obtained an approval from the government to fell both trees, we believe that they should be transplanted as far as practicable. After several rounds of discussion, it was agreed in early 2010 that MTR would remove ET15 in February 2010 to allow root pruning of ET16. HKU will then transplant ET16 to the nearby carpark areas inside the West Gate.

The preparatory works of the transplant are in good progress and the transplanting exercise will be conducted on 5 June 2010 (Saturday).  Works on Saturday would ensure that inconvenience to all University members and visitors will be kept to a minimum.

The following traffic management measures will be implemented from 07:00 to 23:00 on 5 June (Sat)
  1. THE WEST GATE WILL BE CLOSED.
  2. If you drive to the Main Campus, please use the Composite Building Carpark (See Figure 1) or the Kotewall Road entrance(See Figure 2)

YOU ARE ADVISED TO USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT ON 5 JUNE AS FAR AS POSSIBLE.

Pedestrians are advised to use  Haking Wong Stairs and the East Gate to access the campus.

Please follow the instructions of the on-site traffic wardens. The West Gate will be re-opened for vehicular access when the transplanting exercise is completed.

The tree transplant signifies our commitment to environmental conservation. We hope that you would continue to support the shared mission of protecting the environment and accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.
