HKU Sports - Triple Championship Weekend (18)

Date: 2018-03-29
This past weekend HKU University sports teams captured three championship victories in some sports action that kept spectators at the edge of their seats.

The USFHK Men’s Handball Finals on Saturday afternoon started the weekend extravaganza. On home ground the HKU handball team felt the enthusiasm of our home fans and went into the lead by one point at the first half. Then PolyU, probably the tournament favorite, strung a few key goals together in the second half to move ahead. Student fans and supporters stayed behind their home team, continuing to cheer them on. HKU fought back hard and made three important goals in the final 10 minutes of the game, with the decisive winning point made in the final 7 seconds to give HKU a 23:22 victory over their favored rival PolyU. It has been 12 years since the HKU men’s handball team lifted this trophy back in 2006.

HKU’s sport team weekend-dominance continued on Sunday with the Womens’ Badminton Team also taking out a very talented City U team in the USFHK finals at Baptist University. HKU won the first women’s single, then lost the next single and first doubles match, putting HKU behind 2-1 in a best 3 out of 5 championship. The next HKU women’s doubles team fought back hard after losing the first set and then tied up the head to head play with City U at 2 matches each. The final deciding match was a singles match up which went down to the wire, with HKU reigning victorious in the 4 hour championship match up. The last time the women’s team won this championship was 10 years ago in 2008.

Finally, the USFHK Karatedo Championship closed out the weekend at the University of Science and Technology. With real fighting spirit the Women’s Karate Team regained the Overall Women’s Champion which they hadn’t won since the 2012-2013 season and in so doing broke City U’s four year title streak.
