Endowed Lectureships


 A.J.S. McFadzean Lecture

The Lectureship was endowed with donations from friends and past students of Professor A.J.S. McFadzean.  Persons of prominence are invited by the Board of the Faculty of Medicine to deliver a lecture (or lectures) in a branch of medicine or the related sciences.


Aw Boon Haw Memorial Lecture

Daphne W.C. Chun Lecture

The Lectureship was endowed with a donation from a group of friends, colleagues and former students of Professor Daphne W.C. Chun. A distinguished obstetrician or gynaecologist from another medical centre, or a distinguished scholar in close relation with obstetrics and gynaecology specialty is invited to deliver the Daphne W.C. Chun Lecture.


Digby Memorial Lecture

The Lectureship was endowed with the Digby Memorial Fund.  Distinguished medical and non-medical professionals as well as other prominent personalities are invited by the Board of the Faculty of Medicine to deliver a lecture (or lectures).


Distinguished Lecture in Psychology

The Yang Hsueh Chi Education Fund was established in 2003 to support academic activities in psychology.  Distinguished scholars from overseas are invited to deliver lectures, seminars or workshops in the field of psychology.


Dorothy Collins Visiting Lectureship in Chemistry

The Lectureship was established in 2013 in recognition of the generous donation from the late Mrs Dorothy Ada Collins. Persons of prominence in chemistry are invited to visit the Department of Chemistry to give lectures or seminars and participate in its research activities.


Dr S.T. Huang-Chan Memorial Lecture

The Lectureship, endowed with donations from friends, colleagues and former students of the late Dr S.T. Huang Chan, is used to enable persons of prominence in the field of anatomy or allied subjects to deliver a lecture or series of lectures.


Edmund Blunden Lecture

The Lectureship was established in 1985 with donations from friends and former students of Professor Edmund Blunden, Professor of English from 1953 to 1964.  The Lectureship is used to fund a series of lectures on English Studies or allied subjects, to be known as the Edmund Blunden Lectures, and to be delivered by persons of prominence in the field.


Edward K.Y. Chen Distinguished Lecture Series

The Lecture Series, endowed with donations from former students of Professor Edward K.Y. Chen, was established in 2007 to support academic activities in economics and finance.  Distinguished scholars and business leaders are invited to deliver lectures, seminars or workshops in the fields of economics and finance.


Eric Au Memorial Lecture in the Use of Chinese in Law

Since 1993, the Eric Au Memorial Fund Committee has donated an annual sum of $17,500 to endow a series of lectures in the Use of Chinese in Law in memory of Mr Eric Au.  Local scholars, practitioners and members of the judiciary are invited to deliver the lectures.


Erik Kvan Lectureship

The Erik Kvan Fund, which supports the Erik Kvan Lectureship, was established through donations from friends and former students of Dr Erik Kvan.  Persons of prominence in the fields concerned are invited by the Head of either the Department of Philosophy or the Department of Psychology to deliver a lecture (or lectures) on a topic on the philosophy of mind and/or psychology and/or areas of rehabilitation within psychology.


HKU-Norton Rose Lecture Series in Competition Law

To increase awareness of competition law and to promote the University as a regional research centre of competition law, Norton Rose has committed to donate a total sum of $220,000 during 2009–2013 to support the organization of the ‘HKU-Norton Rose Lecture Series in Cometition Law’, which consists of annual public lectures and seminars by prominent competition law scholars.


Hou Pao Chang Memorial Fund Lecture

The Hou Pao Chang Memorial Fund Lecture was incorporated for the first time at the inaugural Hong Kong Pathology Forum in January 2013. The Lecture was part of the Hou Pao Chang Memorial Fund established by Professor Laurence Hou to commemorate his distinguished father, Professor Hou Pao Chang who was Head of the Department of Pathology between 1948 and 1960.

Lo Yuk Tong Foundation Lecture

The Lectureship was endowed with a donation from Mr Lo Yuk Tong, JP, to commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese in 1887.  Persons of prominence are invited by the Board of the Faculty of Medicine to deliver a lecture (or lectures) embodying the results of clinical or experimental research related to any branch of medicine.


Lumb Lecture

The Lectureship was established in 1999 with donations from friends and former students and colleagues of the late Professor Peter Lumb, Chair Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering from  1976 to 1986.  Internationally recognized experts in geotechnics are invited to deliver lectures on topics that enhance the practice of geotechnical engineering.  The lecture is organized biennially.


Peter Allan Memorial Lecture in Public Law

The Lectureship, endowed with donations from the legal profession in Hong Kong in memory of the late Peter Allan, a former Crown Solicitor and Commissioner of the ICAC, is used to enable eminent jurists of international stature to deliver lectures in the field of public law.


Peter Hodge Memorial Lecture

The Lectureship, endowed with donations from former students and friends of the late Professor Peter Hodge, is used to invite scholars of prominence to deliver memorial lectures in the field of social work or allied subjects.


Peter Willoughby Memorial Lecture

Peter Willoughby Memorial Fund was established in 2000 to sponsor the memorial lecture in memory of the late Professor Peter Willoughby and his invaluable contribution to the Faculty of Law and legal education in Hong Kong.


Professor R. Gordon Brown Memorial Lectureship

The Lectureship fund was established in 1978 with donations from friends and former students of the late Professor R. Gordon Brown, Professor of Architecture from 1950 to 1957.  The Lectureship is awarded to a person in the field of architecture who is invited by the Head of the Department of Architecture to visit the Department for a period of about two weeks to deliver lectures and to engage in the teaching work of the Department.


Rayson Huang Visiting Lectureships

The Rayson Huang Visiting Lectureships in Music and in Chemistry were established in 1987 through donations from friends and colleagues of Dr Rayson Huang, Vice-Chancellor of the University from 1972 to 1986.  The Lectureships are held by persons of prominence in the fields of music and chemistry, who are nominated by the Heads of the School of Humanities (in consultation with the Department of Music) and the Department of Chemistry respectively and formally appointed by the Boards of the Faculties of Arts and Science respectively.  The Visiting Lecturers are invited to visit the relevant departments for a period of up to one month, and to participate in teaching and research activities.


Richard Yu Lecture in Medicine

In 2009, Professor Richard Yu donated the sum of $500,000 for the purpose of enhancing the standard of practice in Internal Medicine.  Renowned local and international experts are invited by the Department of Medicine to deliver lectures at Medical Forum or medical conferences.


Ronald Lu & Partners (HK) Limited Visiting Lectureship in Architecture

The Lectureship was established in 1992 with a donation from the Ronald Lu & Partners (HK) Limited.  Persons of prominence are invited to deliver one or more lectures in the Faculty of Architecture on a topic within the sphere of architecture.


S.C. Fan Memorial Lecture

The S.C. Fan Memorial Lecture was established in 2003 with a donation from the family of S.C. Fan of the late Dr S.C. Fan, former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University.  In memory of Dr S.C. Fan, the donation is used to support an annual public lecture on social science issues that are of interest to the public.


S.C. Fong Visiting Professorship/Lectureship in Orthopaedics and Traumatology

In 2013, Mr Gary Fang agreed to make available a maximum of $30,000 each year for the S.C. Fong Visiting Professorship/Lectureship in Orthopaedics and Traumatology.  A distinguished orthopaedic surgeon or researcher is invited to visit the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology for about one week and to deliver a lecture (or lectures).


Serena Yang Lecture

The Serena Yang Lecture was endowed with a donation from Dr Serena Yang.  International renowned scholars are invited to deliver a distinguished lecture in Hong Kong for a sharing research findings and their views on strategic directions for future development of nursing in global context, aiming to establish links with leading international institutions in the nursing discipline.


Shirley Boyde Memorial Lecture

The Shirley Boyde Memorial Lectures are supported by donations from the Shirley Boyde Trust which was established in 1989 in memory of Mrs Shirley Boyde.  Persons of prominence are invited to deliver lecture on a topic in the field of biochemistry.


Veronica Lam Memorial Lecture

The Dr Veronica Lam Kwan Min Sien Memorial Fund was established in 2008 to sponsor the memorial lecture in memory of Dr Veronica Lam and her valuable contribution to the Department of Biochemistry.  Persons of prominence are invited by the Department of Biochemistry to deliver lecture on a topic in the field of biochemistry.


William Mong Distinguished Lectures in Engineering

The William Mong Distinguished Lectures in Engineering are supported by donations from the Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund Ltd to facilitate exchange of new ideas and developments in the field of engineering and to strengthen the ties between the industry and the university.


Wong Yung-Chow Visiting Lectureship in Mathematics

The Lectureship was established in 1986 with a donation from Emeritus Professor Wong Yung-Chow, Professor of Mathematics from 1948 to 1976.  Persons of prominence are invited to visit the Department of Mathematics to give lectures and participate in its research activities.


Woo, Chow, Wong & Partners (HK) Limited Visiting Lectureship in Architecture

The Lectureship was established in 1992 with a donation from the Woo, Chow, Wong & Partners (HK) Limited.  Persons of prominence are invited to deliver one or more lectures in the Faculty of Architecture on a topic within the sphere of architecture.


Wu Yee Sun Education Fund Lecture

The Lecture Series is endowed with a generous donation of $1 million by the late Mr Li Kui Wai to the Faculty of Business and Economics in 2007 for ‘Wu Yee Sun Education Fund for School of Economics and Finance’.  Distinguished scholars and business leaders are invited to deliver lectures in the fields of economics and finance.


Y.K. Cheung Lecture

The Y.K. Cheung Trust Fund, which supports the Y.K. Cheung Lectureship, was established through donations from friends, colleagues and former students of Professor Y.K. Cheung in 2004.  A prominent local/overseas engineer or academic is invited to deliver a lecture on the state-of-the-art developments in structural engineering.  The lecture is organized biennially.
